Rest is one of the promises of God for this life we live on earth. He didn’t just recommend it, He commanded it. Maybe that’s because rest is a weapon. Jason Bourne said “Sleep is a weapon.” When we rest we regenerate physically, mentally and spiritually- it is an act of faith, to trust God to watch over you and yours while you sleep. It’s an act of obedience to rest in God... and this arms us to fight the good fight of faith.
God uses rest as a reward and to prepare us for what is next. Sabbath rest is a command, not just in the Old Testament but in the New Testament too:
“So then, there remains a Sabbath rest for the people of God, for whoever has entered God’s rest has also rested from his works as God did from his. Let us therefore strive to enter that rest, so that no one may fall by the same sort of disobedience. For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.” Hebrews 4:9-12 ESV
