Prayer is not a drive-through window. You can’t just order up what you want from God and expect Him to grant your wish. That’s what fairy-tale-genies do, not what the King of the Universe does. God does want to answer our prayers, though. But first we need to be connected, tuned-in to His will.
“If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.”
John 15:7 ESV
If we abide in The Lord and His word, we won’t ask God for things that are contrary to His will and His word, at least not as much. God isn’t going to help us sin. Period.
I saw a bumper sticker that said “If prayer worked, then 911 would be a prayer hotline.” The pure disdain and unbelief of that boldly-displayed statement made me angry. But then I realized that lots of people don’t believe in prayer because they have never experienced the saving power of Christ. They don’t know what they don’t know. To them it sounds like make-believe, just like the genie.
Imagine how it would be if everyone in the whole world followed Christ. That’s when that bumper sticker will actually be true. But for now, sin is rampant and we need to use the power of prayer to fight the devil so we can be and do all that the Lord designed us for. So pray. Do.
