A New Thing

A new year is always a time when we can hit the reset button and try again...it’s literally a new start. I hear a lot of skepticism about it though.

  • “Since people don’t stick to their resolutions, I won’t make any.”

  • “After 2020, I won’t have any expectations for 2021 - I just want to get out alive.”

  • “I wasn’t able to achieve any of my goals last year, so I won’t make new ones this year.”

That’s not what God says - He made a feast out of the Jewish New Year, Rose Hashanah- and instructed His people to enter the New Year with shouting and blowing the Shofar (think ram’s horn trumpet). Isn’t this exactly what we do in our culture too - it’s Biblical! The Jewish people observe a time of penitence and self-examination to prepare to be cleansed of the old and welcome the new 10 days later in Yom Kippur.

Our God is God who makes things new - He doesn’t repair the old stuff, so we need to learn to let go of it and get on with His plan.

“Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland.”

‭‭Isaiah‬ ‭43:18-19‬ ‭
